Timbaland has been one of the best producers in hip-hop (music, really) for a little more than a decade now, and I think a large part of that is getting to experiment with absolutely nutty stuff. Dirtbag’s “Here We Go” is one such instance of that Timbo tinkering.
It’s built around a framework of two percussive riffs—both, I think, synthesizer-created—that sound like a motorcycle from 2062 being revved underwater. That bruising base is accented by a flute-like something on the hook, and then, on the bridge, one of the revving synths drops out, revealing a pretty descending bit that echoes the flute. This is a monstrosity that sounded like nothing I’d ever heard before when it popped up on the NBA Live 2005 soundtrack, and hasn’t been touched by anything since. And I think it may all be synthesizer-based. Tim Mosley’s damn good at producing.
