Lupe Fiasco feat. Matthew Santos, “Shining Down” (Lyrics)

16 Jun

I had it up, but I’ve taken down the download. You can read here for more on why, in Lupe’s own words. And, well, this is the Internet. If you want to find it, you can.

But buy Lasers. Please buy Lasers.

The “Shining Down” lyrics and a brief review are after the jump; for more lyrics analysis videos, check out redmond24 on YouTube.

Wasalu is back. This is a good thing. With a tentative drum loop, chirping synths, a grinding guitar riff, a touch of Auto-Tune, and a Matthew Santos hook whose melody is borrowed from “Lollipop,” there’s ample musicality here for what should be the first single from Lasers.

Oh, and Lu delivers the lyrical goods: “Comin’ back, hummin’ his hymns a little altered/Your attention put back on the flow like the Department of Water” is a typically cryptic way of explaining his slower cadence, “Lu don’t moo, no, cowards, you only heard lines” has a brilliant homophone embedded, and “I don’t idolize America, I’m dancing with the stars” just stings.

The song is stadium-sized, “Superstar” redux, and head-bob worthy. These are all good things.

You want to be excited about music? Listen to Lupe.

Lyrics

Look up in the sky (Look up in the sky)
Look up in the sky (Look up in the sky)

You thought I was down
You thought I was gone
You thought I wasn’t around
That I left you alone

Well look up in the sky
Just look up in the sky
See that I’m everywhere, everywhere
Shining down on you

Well, well (Well, well)
Is that our little author
Comin’ back, hummin’ his hymns a little altered
Your attention put back on the flow like the department of water
Taken off of the dough, like Little Walter Chess
Yes, baby I’m Jerry Lawler
Rebel with a cause, outlaw with a lawyer
Judge, jury, like Alou
Rap name Lupe but my daddy named me warrior
This is his memorial

You thought I was down
You thought I was gone
You thought I wasn’t around
That I left you alone

Well look up in the sky
Just look up in the sky
See that I’m everywhere, everywhere
Shining down on you

No, I ain’t the nigga tryna get a liquor line
When I be scrippin’ lines, want this petition signed
It says I’m sick of dyin’, sick of this prison time
I really love my people, I’m sick of pimpin’ mine
Now if we Auto-Tune that shit
We can hear the songs from the opera-groomed fat bitch
Tellin’ us not to pursue it, just to shoo it like a blacksmith
We’re trapped, and movin’ round in circles like it’s Chap Stick
And that’s the same encircled way of thinking that we chat with
Well wrap this around your head
Like the bandanas Fabolous used to wrap his hats with
Rather be in feds instead of National Geographics
Well I’m not havin’ it
No

You thought I was down
You thought I was gone
You thought I wasn’t around
That I left you alone

Well look up in the sky
Just look up in the sky
See that I’m everywhere, everywhere
Shining down on you

So, I say hello
And this is for the third time
To everybody out there who ain’t never heard mine
And if you have then you know you ain’t ever heard lyin’
Lu don’t moo, no cowards, you only heard lines
Not a Versa-cherisher, I’d rather have the scars
I don’t idolize America, I’m dancing with the stars
Uh-huh, all of them, yeah, they are too
You look up, and you see us
Shining down on you

You thought I was down
You thought I was gone
You thought I wasn’t around
That I left you alone

Well look up in the sky (Look up in the sky)
Just look up in the sky (Look up in the sky)
See that I’m everywhere, everywhere
Shining down on you
Shining down on you
Shining down on you
Shining down on you

(Note: Though I left just what I thought was a correct interpretation of the lyrics above, “Lu don’t moo, no cow words/no cowards/no cow herds, you only heard lines/heard lions/herd lions/Not a Versa-cherisher/facade cherisher, I’d rather have the scars” is one heck of a beguiling couplet. Look at all of those homophones.)

Not a Facade cherisher —> Also a play on words. You’re correct too.

Thanks for that. Lupe Fiasco: Cleverer than your favorite rapper since 2003 or so.

Unless he is your favorite rapper, in which case he’s only rarely cleverer than himself.

Matthew Santos can lay down a hook like no other.
